When to Run Ads vs Organic Only

What you'll learn:The honest truth about when ads actually workWhen organic rankings are enoughHow to use both together for the best results

When to Run Ads vs Organic Only

Ads aren't always the answer. Organic isn't always enough. Knowing when to use each one, and how they work together, helps you grow without wasting money.

When Organic Is Enough

If you're already in a spot where:

  • Your GBP is ranking in the top 3 for your main keywords
  • You're getting steady inbound leads without paying for ads
  • You can't take more jobs right now anyway

Then ads will just cost you money for leads you can't handle.

Organic is the foundation. It doesn't cost money to keep running, it builds over time, and it doesn't stop when you cut a budget.

When Ads Actually Work

Ads make sense when:

  • You're new and need leads while your organic rankings are building
  • You're moving into a new city and want visibility right away
  • You have a seasonal offer and need short-term results
  • You're already ranking organically and want to show up twice on the same page

Best ad types for local service businesses:

  • Google Local Services Ads (pay per lead, verified badge, high trust)
  • Google Search Ads (pay per click, good for ready-to-buy searches)
  • Meta retargeting (stay in front of people who visited your site but didn't call)

How to Use Both Together

For most established local businesses, the winning setup is:

  1. Organic first -- GBP setup, landing pages, review system
  2. Local Services Ads on top -- to capture leads while organic builds or when entering a new area
  3. Retargeting in the background -- small budget to stay visible to people who already know you exist

This gives you leads from more than one place, so you're not at the mercy of any single channel.
